Rodent control for grain bins

Grain bins near Sioux Falls, sealed and checked

Rodents don't need much of a gap to get at stored grain. We check the bin from outside, the way you would before a delivery, and write down every opening and every reason they have to be there.

Signs

What we look for

  • Droppings or gnawing at a door

Around chutes, sump doors and the hatch.

  • Burrows at the pad

Holes along the base, often under weeds or pallets.

  • Spilled grain and trails

Under augers, around the dryer, along the lane.

What we do

Four steps

  1. Step 1: Walk the site

Every bin, auger and dryer, outside only, from the roof peak to the ground at the pad.

  2. Step 2: Write it down

Each opening and each food source, by bin, in the written plan.

  3. Step 3: Seal and clear

Steel mesh and sheet metal where it fits, and a list of what to clear from the pad.

  4. Step 4: Check back

A follow-up visit to see whether anything is still getting in, and a look before the next fill.

Before and after

What you do, and what we do

  • Before the visit

    • Leave doors and chutes closed

    • Tell us which bins are full and which are empty

    • Note where you've seen tracks or burrows

  • After the work

    • Sweep spilled grain and keep the pad clear

    • Close doors and chutes behind every delivery

    • Call if you see fresh tracks

Questions

Questions about grain bins

Do you have to go inside the bin?

Not usually. We look at the roof vents, doors, chutes, the base and the ground around the pad from outside. If a bin needs entering, that is your decision and your safety plan, not ours, and we won't ask anyone to climb into a bin with grain in it.

How much does rodent control on a farm cost?

It depends on how many buildings there are, how old they are and how many openings we find. We walk the farmstead first and give you a written number before any work starts. What goes into it is on the How pricing works page.

What if rodents come back?

If rodents return through an opening we sealed, we come back and re-seal it at no charge for 12 months from the date of the work. That doesn't cover new gaps, damage from machinery or weather after the work, or buildings we weren't asked to seal. The terms are written on your estimate.

How long until I see a difference?

Most farms see less activity within a couple of weeks of sealing, but it varies with the size of the buildings and how much feed and cover is nearby. We check back and tell you what we find.
